The Juventus Women’s First Team beat Napoli Women 2-1 in the second leg of their Italian Cup quarter-final, meaning a 4-2 aggregate victory will see them face Fiorentina in the semi-finals.
Cristiana Girelli's arrival in the second half proved decisive. On the night she reached 237 appearances for Juventus – an all-time record alongside Arianna Caruso – and she scored the opening goal with her first touch, followed by Lindsay Thomas's second.
THE MATCH REPORT
There was low fog and reduced visibility in Biella for the return leg of the Italian Cup quarter-final between Juventus and Napoli, which started with a slow-paced first half that produced few scoring opportunities. The Bianconere tried their luck from a corner kick after three minutes and then with a few sporadic counterattacks that the duo of Amalie Vangsgaard and Michela Cambiaghi failed to turn into clear scoring chances.
At the other end, Cecilia Floe used her size to try to break down the Juventus defence, but she was repeatedly thwarted by the Bianconere rearguard and only tested Danielle de Jong's reflexes on a couple of occasions.
In the 44th minute, Estela Carbonell curled a left-footed shot towards the top corner, but the ball went just wide.
Juventus stepped up a gear in the second half, with Cambiaghi having two attempts on goal in the first 15 minutes, but neither was on target. In the 61st minute, Barbara Bonansea had a left-footed shot, but it was straight down the middle and Beatrice Beretta saved easily.
The game was changed whilst history was made: Girelli came on to make her 237th appearance for Juventus, joining Arianna Caruso in first place in the all-time rankings. With her first touch, the number 10 scored the opening goal with a simple tap-in from Chiara Beccari's low cross, who did well to get in behind on the right wing.
Shortly afterwards, Girelli came close to scoring her second (and 150th goal for Juventus), while the second goal came in the 80th minute thanks to Thomas, who rounded Beretta and slotted home into an empty net.
In the final few minutes, Napoli reduced the deficit from a corner kick, while Beccari missed a great chance to score the home side's third goal moments later. However, it mattered little as the match ended 2-1, just like in the first leg, and Juventus secured their place in the Italian Cup semi-finals.
