Juventus did not lose ground in the fight for fourth place and defeated Monza 2-0 at the Allianz Stadium, in a match that never looked in doubt.
The decisive goals were scored by Nico Gonzalez and Randal Kolo Muani in the first half. A well-managed match by the Bianconeri, that was made more complicated by the sending off of Kenan Yildiz at the end of the first half. Down to ten men, Juventus were able to remain organised and defend their lead in the second half.
First half: Juve on top and scoring decisive goals
Juventus started well, immediately taking control of the game. In the 4th minute Kolo Muani came close with a spectacular bicycle kick which was saved by Stefano Turati, while in the 9th minute it was Yildiz who tried a shot, having been picked out by Kolo Muani, but he was unable to cause any problems for the Monza goalkeeper.
Juve took the lead after 11 minutes: Nico Gonzalez, with a great finish from outside the box, caught Turati off guard and put the Bianconeri ahead.
Juve persisted and in the 22nd minute Kolo Muani went close to doubling the lead, failing to capitalise on a great chance from close-range and placing his effort wide of the target. However, the French striker redeemed himself shortly afterwards: in the 33rd minute Khephren Thuram broke free out wide and found Kolo Muani, who made no mistake on this occasion to put the Bianconeri 2-0 up with a precise right-footed finish.
Juve’s evening became more complicated following an incident in the closing minutes of the first period: Yildiz, after a challenge with Alessandro Bianco, was sent off in the 47th minute after a VAR review. Juventus were forced to play the entire second half a man down.
Second half: Organisation and Solidity
Despite possessing the numerical advantage, Monza never really managed to trouble Michele Di Gregorio. The visitors started strongly, immediately winning two corners, but the Bianconeri rearguard stood strong.
Midway through the first half Juve allowed Monza to have possession, but without running any danger of conceding. Samuele Birindelli tried a header in the 51st minute, but his effort was too central. In the 58th minute there was another great chance for the Bianconeri following a splendid exchange between Kolo Muani and Nico Gonzalez, with the latter forcing Turati into an important save.
Monza tried to react, especially through Omari Forson and Gianluca Caprari, but were always met by an alert Juventus defence, with Manuel Locatelli in great form and Di Gregorio remaining solid on the few occasions that he was called into action (making an excellent save to deny Caprari in the 82nd minute).
In the closing stages, Juventus expertly managed their lead, even coming close to scoring a third goal on the counterattack.
It ended with a deserved 2-0 win: now the Bianconeri look ahead to a crucial double header away from home, in Bologna and Rome against Lazio.
