The Women's First Team are Serie A Women's Cup champions! Isaac Guerrero's side drew 2-2 with Roma in 90 minutes, and then triumphed in a dramatic penalty shootout.
Having won the inaugural edition of the competition last season, Juventus remain the only club to have won the Serie A Women's Cup.
THE MATCH REPORT
It was a difficult start for Juventus, with Roma immediately pressing high up the pitch to prevent the Bianconere from establishing their usual possession game. In the 6th minute, Eva Schatzer got into the box and went down after trying to beat a defender, but play continued. The first real chance of the match fell to Juve. In the 14th minute, Annamaria Serturini tried to score with a curling shot, only to be denied by a superb save from Valentina Soggiu.
Roma responded in the 17th minute through Manuela Giugliano, who failed to find the net from a good position. As the minutes ticked by, the Giallorosse increased the pressure and broke the deadlock in the 27th minute. Valentina Bergamaschi delivered an excellent cross and Kayleigh Van Dooren fired home to make it 1-0.
Juventus struggled to respond and Roma continued to pose a threat. In the 32nd minute, Giugliano forced Larissa Rusek into a save, whilst the Bianconere tried to build a few counter-attacks without managing to capitalise on them. In the 40th minute, Alba Redondo had space to pick out Serturini, but misplaced the final pass. The teams went into the break with Roma leading by a goal.
Isaac Guerrero made an immediate change at the start of the second half, bringing on Julia Bartel for Lea Khelifi, and Juventus returned to the pitch with a more aggressive approach. In the 48th minute, Remina Chiba had a shot on goal that didn’t trouble Soggiu, but in the 55th minute it was Roma who doubled their lead. Giugliano took a corner which Maya Antoine got on the end of to make it 2-0.
Juventus’ response was immediate. In the 59th minute, Redondo capitalised on a serious error by Soggiu to get her side back into the game, reducing the deficit to 2-1. Guerrero also brought on Emma Stolen Godo, and Juventus pushed further forward. In the 66th minute, Serturini tried her luck from distance, then in the 68th minute a fine run by Stolen Godo set up Redondo for a shot, which was deflected for a corner.
Roma remained a threat and, in the 63rd minute, Martina Piemonte came close to scoring a third with a shot that went just wide. In the final quarter of an hour, however, it was Juventus who pushed forward with increasing determination. Federica D’Auria, Danique Noordman and Amaiur Sarriegi were also brought on, and in the 86th minute, Noordman herself came very close to equalising with a shot that grazed the post.
In the 91st minute, another huge chance came. Sarriegi turned beautifully and shot with her left foot, hitting the inside of the post. Juventus continued to believe and, just when the match seemed all but over, they were rewarded with the moment that changed everything. In the 95th minute, Redondo shot and Antoine handled the ball, leading to a penalty.
Redondo stepped up to take the spot-kick herself and equalised in the 96th minute. After seven minutes of added time, the second half came to an end: Juventus and Roma were level at 2-2, and the match went into extra time.
EXTRA-TIME
Juventus went back on the attack in extra time. In the 92nd minute, Schatzer tried a left-footed shot from distance, but failed to hit the target, whilst the Bianconere continued to control possession and press forward in search of the winning goal.
In the 100th minute, however, it was Roma who came close to scoring. Alice Corelli received the ball in an excellent position and unleashed a powerful shot that crashed against the post. The Giallorosse tried again through Giugliano, first with a shot that went over the bar and then, in the 104th minute, with a shot on the counter-attack that grazed the post.
In the second half of extra time, it was Juventus who created two huge chances within the space of a few minutes. In the 106th minute, Sarriegi broke free with a splendid backheel and shot towards goal, but Soggiu pulled off a superb save to keep Roma in the game. A minute later, from a corner taken by Schatzer, Sarriegi headed the ball straight against the crossbar.
In the 110th minute, Guerrero brought on Emilie Mece to replace Redondo, who had been the star of the show with the brace that had taken Juventus into extra time. In the closing stages, Roma looked dangerous once again. In the 117th minute, Rusek saved Giugliano’s shot and, from the rebound, Giada Greggi attempted an overhead kick, sending the ball wide.
Even extra time was not enough to decide the match. After 120 minutes, Juventus vs Roma remained 2-2, and the Serie A Women’s Cup had to be decided on penalties.
PENALTIES
The first to step up to take a penalty for Juventus was Sarriegi, who scored. Giugliano responded for Roma to keep the score level. Then Bartel stepped up and scored, before Marta Pandini scored as well.
Stolen Godo converted Juventus’ third penalty, before Ella Ottey hit the crossbar, giving Juventus their first lead of the night. Schatzer then reinforced the advantage by scoring her penalty.
The decisive moment came with Roma’s next penalty, as Rusek saved Elisabetta Oliviero’s spot-kick, sparking wild celebrations among the Bianconere.
With that, Juventus won the Serie A Women’s Cup for a second successive season.
